To the east the community grades into less steep juniper-oak woodland with much grass cover. To the west is an outcrop area sloping down to the road with vertical ridges of shale. Further west is community B, a Pinus virginiana dominated woodland.;There are some larger gaps with mostly Danthonia spicata and an outcrop area to the west of the plot with shale ridges (shallow) running downslope. This area has Centaurea maculosa. Community past this area to the west is dominated by Pinus virginiana (see Community B).
